How Start the room works
Think of the room as a lobby with a single set of doors. Until you open them, guests sit in your branded waiting room. Their pages quietly check every few seconds whether the room is live. Nothing for them to do, nothing to refresh.
Opening the doors takes two steps, always in this order.
- Start the meeting in your meeting app as the host, exactly as you would for any meeting. This is the step that makes the meeting itself exist.
- Press Start the room in your host control panel. This tells every waiting page that the meeting is live.
- Within a few seconds, each guest's page switches from the lobby to the meeting, inside your page, with no reload and no click. Guests arrive muted, so the start is calm rather than a wall of background noise.
- Guests who arrive after you have started skip the wait and go straight into the live meeting.
Why one start beats a trickle of joins
With a plain meeting link, the start of a big meeting is a slow leak. People click in one at a time, unmute by accident, ask whether others can hear them, and the host waits for a critical mass before beginning. The first few minutes belong to the stragglers rather than to the agenda.
Start the room turns that into a single moment. Everyone who arrived on time is already in your lobby, and they all enter together when you are ready. For a company that means the all-hands genuinely starts at the time on the invitation. For a creator it means the welcome lands on a full room. And because guests arrive muted, the first sound anyone hears is yours.
Run of show for the first two minutes
Hosts who use Start the room well treat the opening as a small production. A simple sequence works for almost any event.
- About five minutes before: start the meeting in your meeting app, check your camera and microphone, and have any co-hosts join.
- At the scheduled time: press Start the room. Wait a few seconds for guests to arrive on the page.
- First words: welcome people by the name of the event, tell them they joined muted and how to ask questions, and give the agenda in one sentence.
- From the Generic Room up: fire a burst of confetti or applause with keys 1–5 right after the welcome, so the room feels like it has started together.
- Then hand over to your first speaker, or begin teaching.
Where it matters most
Any meeting benefits from a clean start, but some events depend on it.
- Town halls and all-hands, where executives want to start on the minute and late joins disrupt the opening message.
- Product launches and reveals, where the countdown ends, the doors open and the announcement lands on everyone at the same time.
- Masterclasses and workshops, where the first exercise needs the whole group present.
- Celebrations, award ceremonies and business birthdays, where the opening is the moment people remember.
- Training sessions, where trainers want the group to begin together rather than repeat the introduction for latecomers.
Starting with a team: hosts, co-hosts and producers
On a larger event, the person who speaks first is not always the best person to press the button. Many teams split the job. The producer, or a colleague acting as one, starts the meeting in the meeting app, checks that speakers are connected, and presses Start the room on the agreed cue. The host stays focused on the opening words.
Agree the cue before the day. A simple version: the producer says we are live in the meeting, presses Start the room, waits a few seconds for guests to arrive, then gives the host a nod. Keep the control panel open on a laptop that is not sharing its screen, so nobody in the audience sees the panel. And have one person watch the room page on a second device during the start, so you know when guests are in rather than guessing.
For recurring events, such as a weekly community call or a monthly all-hands, write the sequence down once and reuse it. A clean start becomes a habit, and guests learn that your meetings begin when they say they will.
Which tier includes it
Start the room is part of every plan. The free 30-day trial and the Generic Room include it alongside the waiting room, browser join and guest capture. The Generic Room adds the features that build on the start: live effects to mark the moment, the attendee list to see who came in, and capacity warnings so a big start does not surprise you. The Branded Room carries the same start in your own brand, on your own domain. Custom Deluxe gives the room its own Go Live command center, and multi-room accounts, so a company or agency can run several rooms with their own starts, are available through our team.
Honest limits and the fix for the common mistake
Start the room does not start your meeting on the meeting platform; only the host can do that, in the meeting app. If you press Start the room before the meeting itself is running, guests see a message that the meeting has not started. The fix is simply to start the meeting in your app as host, and guests will be able to join.
The button moves the guests who are on your room page. Anyone who joined with the regular meeting link in their desktop app follows the platform's own rules for joining, and never saw your lobby in the first place. Guests join as attendees and muted, so remind them how to unmute when you want them talking. And every guest who enters counts toward your meeting plan's participant limit, so check your licence before a large start.
